Venables, a heritage-listed building constructed in 1909, holds a significant place in the history of Camperdown. Originally, this charming structure served as the residence for the nurses who dedicated their efforts to the former Children's Hospital in Camperdown. The building was named after Nora Venables, the matron during the time. Her dedication and leadership were integral to the hospital's operations and the welfare of the nurses who lived there.
Today, Venables has been transformed into a residential complex, featuring 38 units, keeping the essence of the original architecture, with solid brick construction, timber floors, and large open verandas.
Fun Fact: Janet Parker, a former resident and nurse who trained at the hospital in 1936 fondly recalled Venables as a wonderful home, despite the strict rules nurses had to follow. During her time, all nurses were single women, adhered to a 9 pm curfew, and were under the watchful eyes of the matron.
